Affiliates are using Twitter to promote offers from merchants. Yes I am stating the obvious. What most of us don’t realize is how often this occurs, the tactics used by affiliates, and why it’s important to monitor the tweet content.

Frequency Of Affiliate Tweets

Affiliates tweet a lot. Affiliates tweet an average of 120,000 times per week. Sixty to seventy percent of all affiliates use social media and 47% of all affiliates use Twitter — these stats via The Search Monitor and Affiliate Benchmarks.

Affiliates like Twitter because it’s free and it’s very easy to get started. It takes just a few minutes to create a Twitter account. You also don’t need a large following to get noticed, which means an affiliate can start tweeting and getting results instantly.

The trick is using hashtags within the tweet. Hashtags are similar to keywords in a search engine. Twitter users can follow hashtags or run specific searches for hashtag content.

Therefore, because anyone searching for or following the hashtag will see tweets, the affiliate can immediately garner attention without a large group of followers.

Affiliate Trends On Twitter

As an observer of affiliate tweeting behavior, we notice the following trends:

Multiple Twitter Identities. We have noticed that affiliates using Twitter often maintain multiple Twitter identities. Based on data pulled for the second week in November 2011, 75% of the affiliates found on Twitter maintain more than one Twitter alias. They do this for several reasons: to re-tweet their own posts under different user names in order to drive up a tweet’s popularity; to tweet the same thing over again without appearing redundant; and to follow themselves to ‘seed’ a follower list.

Lack of Merchant Diversity. There seems to be very little merchant diversity within tweets, meaning that the same merchants seem to be promoted over and over again. The most widely promoted merchants on Twitter are iTunes.Apple.com with 49% of affiliate tweets, Astrology.com with 5% of affiliate tweets, and Groupon with 2% of affiliate tweets. That’s according to The Search Monitor Tweet Data from December 20, 2011. You can find a full list of top merchants promoted on Twitter in December 2011 on The Search Monitor Blog.

Best Practice: Monitoring Affiliate Tweet Contents

Whether you are an affiliate, an affiliate network, or an affiliate manager, monitoring tweets should be a key component to your marketing intelligence strategies for the following reasons:

Affiliate Recruitment. If you are an affiliate network or affiliate manager, monitoring affiliate tweets is a great way to find new affiliates to recruit for your program. You want to look for active tweeters with strong content. On December 20, 2011, 7,194 different Twitter IDs sent out tweets on behalf of 1,320 different merchants.

Competitive Advantage. If you are an affiliate, you should know what merchants are being heavily promoted on Twitter to look for gaps in the market. Watching trends on Twitter and then promoting merchants that match the trends can generate some quick free traffic.

Monitoring Promotions. For merchants who are running time-sensitive promotions like a one day promo code during the holidays, you will want to monitor your affiliate’s tweeting activities to ensure your copy rules are being honored and that expired promotions are not being tweeted past the expire date.

New research is indicating that mobile marketing industry is growing rapidly and tech professionals who specialize in m-commerce products for smartphones and tablets are not only increasing in numbers, but they are also paying a great deal more than their counterparts who are performing the same tasks but for the e-commerce marketplace.

Data from research by ReThink Recruitment, a business & technology staffing company, has shown that the average salary for an IT employee who creates commerce tools for mobile devices is 20 percent more than that of workers who work in the e-commerce sector.

The survey’s results show that junior designers who create tools for smartphones and tablets earn about £350 every day, whereas those working to create tools for a desktop or laptop device make about £280 daily. Similarly, m-commerce program managers earn an average of £600 per day, which is a figure that is approximately £100 greater than what their e-commerce equivalents are earning.

At the same time, WANTED Analytics data is saying that the number of these m-commerce jobs is on the rise. Within the last three months, there have been 4,400 new job ads placed by employers and staffing firms which are asking for workers with mobile marketing skills. This is a dramatic spike in the volume for this type of jobs when compared with the figures from two years ago.

In fact, since the same three year span last year, the number of mobile category jobs has increased by 16 percent. When compared to 2009 during the same 90 day period, the volume has increased by 120 percent. About 10 percent of all marketing professional job ads include a request for mobile skills.

When considering offline marketing, it is vital to set a budget and make sure that you keep track of your efforts. Because offline marketing is not free, you want to be wise and you don’t want to waste of lose money. Normally, a business can take advantage of bulk advertisement, where the target large masses of people at a time. Though it may cost more at the time, it normally cuts the production of each item, such as print ads or postcard mailers. Offline marketing, if done right can be extremely effective. At the same time, if done wrong, offline marketing can waste time and money. So, How Can Offline Marketing Help My Business?

Offline Marketing Brings Credibility

I have seen many businesses that I found in the search engines that seemed to be ok. They have a decent website, make a good offer, but there is just something that makes me wonder how serious or trustworthy they are. Though they may have good intentions, they just seem to not have it quite together. Then you see a business with a similar business that has invested in offline marketing. Maybe they run an ad in a magazine or send out a postcards. Maybe you just happen to see their trifold or find a business card. They appear more trustworthy. There is something to the consumers mind that trusts a business that has given prospective clients a tangible form of their business.

You Can Focus On One Message

When using offline marketing, the key is to draw your future clients into your business. Whether you offer a service, physical products, or whatever, you want to make a transaction and offer something in exchange for their money. People don’t just give away their hard earned cash. Before they give, they need to trust. How can they trust a business that does not have a clear direction? If they see your business name on a postcard with all sorts of information, but no real message, then they are less likely to trust you and give you business. It is better to focus on one thing and promote that one thing rather than promoting multiple aspects of your business. If you convert them to becoming a client, then they can learn more about your business. In the mean time, build a relationship with a singular message that meets the needs of your target market.

Please note that as you promote a singular aspect of your business, it is wise to promote multiple benefits your client will receive. For instance, you have a windows, doors, and simple home upgeade business. If you decide to promote the widow aspect of you business, then show options of windows, with specific benefits that client will receive from both the new windows and working with your business. This type of marketing helps answer questions they may have, so you don’t have to spend time convincing them.

You Can Promote Exclusive Offers

Along with a focused message, you can make a specific offer to clients that respond to your singular message. What I mean is that you can place a coupon in/on your offline marketing material that is only a specific ad. You can print out postcards and target a specific neighborhood, only offering them a 10% discount if they buy in X amount of days, while presenting the postcard they received. This helps you bring in clients, but also helps you know how effective your ads are. If you offer an exclusive discount to a particular group and nobody responds, then you know that you need to try a different method.

Also, offering exclusive promotions give people a sense of uniqueness in that they are receiving something that other people are not receiving. This sense of being unique helps build buyer confidence in themselves. They know that they must act quickly, or the offer will end. This brings a sense of urgency that drives consumers. When urgency plus being unique are brought together, you have a higher chance of seeing a return on your offline marketing investment.

I hope these thought will you consider offline marketing and that there is an advantage. Though we live in an internet age, there is still room for offline marketing.

Affiliate marketing is an excellent strategy to make extra revenue on the Internet. Cloaking your links can safeguard you from having unscrupulous visitors change your affiliate link to theirs; thus, stealing your commissions. Visitors can click on your cloaked links and be re-directed towards the affiliate sales page, but your internet site will show up inside the URL bar. This indicates that you compose your material in such a way that your customers feel as if you are speaking to them, thus they experience much more of a connection. It can be tough to create content sitting in front of your computer. You can achieve this natural writing easier by taking a notepad and/or a recorder and go for a walk by way of the park, or while driving to work–just record your thoughts. It’s a great way of creating interesting content.

Make certain they have excellent tracking systems and that they pay out commissions on time. (NOTE: If you’re new to affiliate marketing and blogging, take a look at this site again–they pay out 100% commission straight to you and have an automatic blog set up so you can start up instantly). Find out if you will be able to rate their customer service and have direct access to them. Will they market you, either with emails, backlinks or even a press release?

We have collected trends in social media, marketing, business, gaming and mobile and combined all of them into this post. Trends collected by Priit Kallas, Mart Prööm and Raul Kaevand. This is our third annual presentation about what to expect in social media marketing in the coming year. We are getting pretty good at this. Here are the 21 social media trends you should watch out for in 2012.

1. Social media marketing disappears

Social media is going to be integral part of everything we do when promoting our business. This will make social media an integral part of marketing and it will not be a separate activity. Much like SEO or email marketing, social media will be just one tool in the box.

2. Integrating social media to corporate websites

Brands start large scale integration of social media content into their digital properties. Big brands will use social media connect and user generated content to get closer to customers. This will help them get most out of true fans and brand advocates by linking their web properties to conversations.

3. More support through social media

The integration of social media will lead to people reporting their problems in their channel of choice. Social media integration lets some of those problems be handled by the peers. However, companies should find ways to avoid their social media channels becoming a glorified helpdesk.

4. Social CRM will make inroads in larger organizations

Social data will be added to the CRM systems to find trends in sentiment and indivitual preferences of customers. The goal is to engage the customer in a conversation and give value that binds them tighter to the brand. As brands lose control of online interaction social CRM will help them react and predict how conversations are taking place. Findings from IBM showed that in the next three to five years, 81% plan to focus on customer analytics and customer relationship management (CRM) solutions.

5. Social media will influence more sales

Social media integration will allow customers to get real user opinions before making purchase decisions. Social commerce is not web shop on Facebook. It’s a digital property where people can make their decision based on marketing materials from the brand and augmented with feedback from existing customers in a form of ratings, reviews and comments.

6. Social commerce on mobile devices

We will lead into a new era in eCommerce where you can directly purchase from your Facebook account. With proliferation of mobile platforms social commerce will become popular on mobile devices. Facebook’s Open Graph will also let you directly purchase with Facebook credits based on recommendations by your friends.

7. Social media budgets will grow

Most companies will increase their social media budgets. This includes in-house spending on and outsourced services. Part of the investments go to boost their own social presence through blogs and product reviews. Rest goes to external sites like Facebook.

8. Social media advertising will grow

Social media channels are looking to turn a profit so they are looking for ways to get at your advertising budget. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and others are looking into way to display more marketing messages to their users. This will increase budgets dedicated to social media advertising.

Social media advertising will grow to $5 Billion in 2012, 25% of that vill be locally targeted social advertising.

9. Social media ROI is a must

More result oriented. Still less than half of the marketers measure results from social media. Social media ROI is a hot topic but less than half of the marketers report seeing it. We see that the budgets will grow and social gets more important in the brand’s marketing mix. This means that C-level will demand results. Dollars in sales. It can be as easy as direct sales from Facebook or a bit more vague as in conversion rate of people from social channels is higher than average.

In the course of our conversations with CMOs worldwide, an overwhelming consensus emerged. The vast majority of CMOs believe there are three key areas for improvement. They must understand and deliver value to empowered customers; create lasting relationships with those customers; and measure marketing’s contribution to the business in relevant, quantifiable terms. Insights from the Global Chief Marketing Officer Study (PDF).

10. Rise of the branded content

Next to advertising there will be a push be in the user’s stream. This means brands need to create content that is good enough to be curated and shared. Content has longer shelf life, can be reused in different channels, has higher perceived value for customers. This means that content creation budgets may in many cases exceed the social advertising budgets. It wouldn’t be surprising if some brands will kill advertising in favor of content creation.

11. Content Curation and Discovery

Information explosion has created an attention deficit and people want to have a quick overview of what’s important and easily find what they need. Aggregation and content curation are going to be very important and brands start filtering information to give value to their customers.Brands will integrate curation into their IT or use third party services. News aggregation apps like Flipboard and magazine apps will find a market in corporate circles.

12. Tabletizing and mobilizing websites

Not exactly a social media thing but businesses start to make their sites mobile. Like 10 years ago companies made websites because everybody else did, now they will make their sites mobile because everybody else does. People will use more social networks’ messaging instead of regular email and IM. (Webmail providers should be worried).

13. Social gaming will grow and spill over to real world

Social Media Games have more players than prime time TV shows have viewers. In-game ads and branded game items will become important promotional tools. As social media will become more mobile so will social gaming. This means that games that are hosted on social networks, such as Zynga and EA on Facebook, will be playable on mobile devices. These kinds of games will be played on-the-go – when you’re traveling by bus, sitting in a boring lecture, waiting for your lunch. Social gaming will be integrated with real life to physically perform tasks offline that have effect in the virtual world. Engage real friends, go to locations, flash mobs, etc. The potential growth of mobile social gaming will be huge.

14. Location! Location! Location!

Location based services will be everywhere. Local information, reviews, coupons, loyalty programs and more. All tied in with your social graph. We are moving towards an era of real-time need for information. More and more people will be checking for recommendations about nearby restaurants, bars, hotels, etc. Location based services will be part of many marketing campaigns. Near-field communication chips in mobile devices get more common and will pave the way to the new era of “tap & pay” commerce. Loyalty programs will start moving towards NFC and location based solutions. NFC will be a convenient way for you to connect, share and react.

15. Most social media usage will be on mobile devices

Social media is happening in real time and people share content when it’s happening! As smartphone penetrations reaches majority and tablets become increasingly popular, sharing content will move towards mobile devices. Smartphones gives us extra depth into personalization – we can share what we want, when we want. The limits are fading! You will always be connected with social media, no matter where you are!

16. Group buying sites will add location based services

Let’s face it, it is a brain dead model. Grow a huge list by offering really cheap deals and then sell that list to businesses to get really cheap deals. Group buying will not go away but businesses will understand better what it is and use it accordingly. To spell it out: businesses buy an opportunity to let potential customers sample their offering at a hugely discounted rate in hopes of repeat business. New layer of value can be added by integrating with location based services that will alert users to deals when they are in the neighborhood.

17. Interacting with live TV in social media

Live TV shows will react to user interactions such as votes, suggestions, etc. We have the ability to change what’s happening by providing real-time feedback on social networks. TV is going to be everywhere through mobile apps.

18. News will be social

News websites will gradually be replaced by applications integrated with social media technology such as Facebook’s Open Graph. While this won’t happen instantly, we’re going down that road as we speak. People will be reading news from their dedicated applications such as iPad’s Flipboard or Washington Post Social Reader. We will take in a lot of recommendations and read the same things that our friends are reading.

19. Mobile apps will become more social

All of the successful new mobile apps will be deeply integrated with social networks allowing you to share and engage more than ever before. We will be taking in a lot of suggestions and recommendations from our friends, colleagues and other trustworthy peers.

20. Your social media footprint will grow

Frictionless sharing capabilities and social gestures will make our lives increasingly visible on social networking sites. Music, TV shows, check-ins, purchases and more will be automatically posted to social media sites. Always connected, always sharing! If you don’t share, your friends will. Some may rise privacy concerns but most people will ignore the implications and their lives are going to be more open than ever before.

21. Facebook will break the 1 Billion people mark

Where does that more than 1 billion Facebook users come from? The countries with more than 20 million people and Facebook penetration below 20% will add most of this growth in 2012. Add the potential growth of other countries and you get to a cool billion or 1.1 billion even. And that does not include China.

Small business owners have a lot of options for developing winning strategies in the new year.

The New Year is just around the corner and for small business owners the often daunting task of developing a solid online marketing strategy for 2012 looms ahead, too. What should small business owners focus their marketing efforts on in 2012? What marketing strategies will yield high conversion rates and generate lucrative sales for small businesses in the New Year?

To find out, BizBytes turned to Roberta Backus, chairwoman of Backus Turner International, a South Florida-based branding firm and Guido Gaona, director of the technology practice at Burston Marsteller Latin America. Backus has been in business for over 32 years and her client roster includes companies like Lowe’s Home Improvement and Trump International. Gaona’s clients include Sony, HP and Intel.

Backus and Gaona have identified five trends that small business owners should consider when developing their marketing plans for 2012.

Online reputation management. “Your company’s online reputation is going to become more important than ever in 2012,” Backus said. “You’ve got to monitor and maintain your online reputation closely. You don’t want to lose a sale because of a negative post that appears about your company in a search result. It’s imperative that you take control of what’s being said about you online. You’ve got to spend time each day putting out positive content about what you do.”

TIP: Backus recommends spending at least one hour each day putting out positive content about your company. Once you’ve created quality content, get your friends and clients to share it on their social networks as well.

Using Google + . “The most important thing small business owners can do with Google + in 2012 is to first have a social media plan in place regarding how they are going to use it,” Gaona said. “Small business owners need to ask themselves what they want to do on Google + and what kind of content they want to put out. The tool they use, whether it’s Facebook, Twitter or Google + is irrelevant if a good social media plan is not in place. Also, remember that Google + is in its infancy and we need to see what is going to happen with it to determine if it’s a viable marketing tool.”

TIP: Gaona recommends adding Google + as a tool in your social media arsenal. Update your Google + as often as you update your Facebook or Twitter pages. But don’t use Google + as the only social network presence for your business.

Using mobile apps to make marketing easier. “If you’re a small business, you don’t need a mobile app,” Backus said. “Instead what you need is a mobile version of your site. You also need to start using apps that make it faster and easier to market your company. There are countless apps online to help you streamline your social media updating. There are also apps that will alert you when someone posts something about you online.”

TIP: Backus recommends that small business owners use mobile apps like TweetDeck to manage all of their social networks at the same time.

Local search. “In 2011, geo-targeted local search exploded and it’s going to continue to be a major trend for 2012,” Gaona said. “More and more, people want to know what is near them. What restaurants should they go to? What stores should they shop at? Everyone wants this information, especially on their mobile phones. That is why geo-targeting your company is so important.”

TIP: Gaona recommends placing geo-targeted ads on Yelp, Foursquare and other popular social platforms to promote your small business in local search results. He also recommends running special promotions and discounts on Foursquare, one of the most popular location-based social media tools being used today.

Online Reviews. “I don’t think a bad online review is a death knell for your business,” Backus said. “In 2012, change your thinking and look at a negative review instead as an opportunity to engage with a customer. If they’ve had a bad experience, offer to make it right. Give a discount on a future purchase or give something away free. This goes a long way in repairing the damage of a negative online review.”

TIP: Backus recommends spending at least 20 minutes a day combing online review sites and social networks to see what people are saying about your business. Use a free tool like SocialMention to help you aggregate the posts, status updates and online reviews about your company online.

You cannot be successful in your direct marketing network without getting others who are willing to work hard to join in with you. This creates your “down line” which allows you to profit from the hard work of others that have signed up under you. In order to bring in big profits and be successful as a team every member of this down line has to work extremely hard.

The problem is many people just starting out with network marketing go about getting others to join their direct marketing network all wrong. For instance, they start by trying to recruit friends and family members who may sign up just to do them a favor. The problem with this is that those people are not going to really work in the long term to keep the network successful.

The goal is to line your direct marketing network with people who genuinely want to be in the business with you and who are going to work for the success of the network as a whole. It’s like putting together a team that you trust and which can work together to help one another out. That is how you all become successful in the long run.

Use the Internet

Instead of going door to door or guilt tripping your friends and family members, go online and use all of the resources available there to reach out to people from all over the world. The Internet has actually made network marketing easier because you aren’t limited to people who live in your immediate area.

You can also be more productive at finding people to join your direct marketing network when you work online because you don’t have to physically knock no doors and drive around town. You can go from one website to another and use many forms of advertising to reach out to millions of people at once.

When you use all available resources you can actually be reaching out to others while you are sleeping, on vacation, or otherwise off enjoying your life.

Don’t Direct Sell

One mistake many beginners make is to push the business too hard. If your direct marketing network is a valuable, worthwhile business others will see that without you pushing it in their face with brute force. Go with a soft sell that highlights the benefits of joining your network and you will get much further with most people.

Determine Your Target

When you sell products you have to know your target market and selling your business to others is no different. Figure out what type of person is most likely to enjoy the marketing opportunity you have to offer and then find ways to reach out to them online. This way you are not just begging random people to join your direct marketing network.

Figure out what these people want and need and find ways to offer them what they want. You want to put your direct marketing network in a light that they will see it as the answer to their problems.

Yet, you can’t misrepresent anything. If you entice people with false promises they will see through it and your network line will not be successful in the long term. Tell the truth but also ensure everyone knows how great your direct marketing network actually is!

There are five must-use tactics to integrate mobile into overall brand mobile marketing plans, says consultant Heidi Cohen. Brands have to be available to mobile searchers. Mobile search is used more frequently than computer-based search, Cohen argues. That means creating a separate, targeted mobile search budget and strategy, especially because mobile tends to be used in a way that is much more local and often invoked closer to an actual purchase.

In many cases, a mobile website is a good idea. Speed counts on mobile websites, so make sure your mobile site loads in less than five seconds and focuses on the prime activity for mobile users, which often is “find something to do or buy right now.”

A call-to-action often is helpful, given the use of mobile search for finding things to do and products to buy. Use tailored promotion codes with your call-to-action to ensure that you can track contribution to sales and phone calls. Where you can, determine if there are peak usage times to target mobile content in the future.

Also, use text messages to deliver valuable, time-sensitive 160-character information. Likewise, it might pay to rework email messages so they are mobile-friendly, since it’s where most people find out about deals on their phone.

One out of four mobile subscribers only use voice, so a significant portion of potential interactios will use voice, not some Internet-related approach. Also, one out of five consumers calls or texts family and friends once they’re in a store. So include your phone number in every piece of mobile content including your website and search ads.

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the promotional tool of choice for many website owners because they know that most Internet users do not search for a particular website when finding products to buy; instead, they enter what words come to mind when they want to see or buy at the search tabs in the search engine homepage and then skim through each website until they run upon something that merits their full attention.

SEO focuses on targeting the right keywords and placing them in strategically selected places in articles as well as spreading backlinks systematically through the Web. So how can you tailor your search engine optimization campaign to make people visit your site more often? Here are some tips:

Tip #1 Plan Your Keywords

Anticipate the keywords that others often enter, then incorporate them in your articles. Using your accumulated observations, together with your intuition, try to find out what users are most likely to enter if they want to visit a website whose topic is the same as your website.

Don’t use keywords that are too outlandish such that others won’t think about them. But don’t use keywords that other websites often use when searching for the topic of your website – for there will be competition.

Tip #2 Think Like Search Engines Act Like Humans

Don’t dare attempt to fool search engines by stuffing your articles with too many keywords. Search engine algorithms are clever, and they can detect and lower the SEO rating or even ban websites that try to beat the competition unfairly through keyword stuffing. If you want to write articles, write it for human consumption, not for search engine consumption.

Tip #3 Determine Your Keyword Density

Ensure proper keyword density and modify as needed. A rule of thumb is that 3 to 5 percent of your article should be made up of keywords.

And it’s not only about your homepage; each page of your website needs keywords so that there will be a theme which search engines can examine, and the more pages you get a search engine to rank, the better your SEO rating will be.

Tip #4 Choose Backlinks That Make Sense

Post backlinks to related websites. Not only do backlinks increase visitors to your site; they help beautify your website’s SEO rating. However, make sure that the sites where you post backlinks are popular and related to your web content. Indiscriminate backlinking can reduce SEO rating.

Post other websites’ backlinks. It’s not only your own backlinks that can increase SEO score; other sites can post their backlinks into your website too. That is a sign of rising popularity, which search engines can pick up.

Tip #5 Seek Expert Help

Get an expert to do all the search engine optimization tasks for you. It may be a little pricey to hire, but SEO experts, with years of experience, know how to approximate what the search engine optimization algorithms want from websites that deserve ranking up.

While SEO experts mind the marketing, you have more time to mind administrative concerns of your business.

SEO will remain a premiere website promotion tool for as long as search engines exist. These five tips – mostly basic advice – can help a fledgling search engine optimization program become a juggernaut in no time.
